Surjeet to lead revamped Bengal Warriors in PKL Season V

A new looking and revitalized Bengal Warriors team was unveiled here today for the fifth season of Vivo Pro Kabaddi League commencing from July 28. The Kolkata Leg will be held from September one to seven. Vivo Pro kabaddi league has expanded this year with 12 teams, and it has grown many folds since last 4 seasons. It is now by far the largest sports league in the country.

Bengal Warriors has retained two players -- Jang Kun Lee (Korean super raider) andRavinderKumawat(a young turk with a bundle of talent). With the new team Bengal Warriors will challenge for the title in this edition.

The star players to join the squad include experienced defender from Services Surjeet Singh, who donned the UMumbacolours in season IV, and ManinderSinghand Ran Singh, both former players of Jaipur Pink Panthers. The squad of 18 looks well balanced with the ideal combination of the wealth of experience matching with the exuberance of the youth.

Jang Kun Lee has been with the Warriors since season 1, one of the only 4 players to play for the same team for all 5 seasons, and is also the highest paid player in the team commanding Rs 80.3 lakhs followed by Surjeet Singh with Rs73 Lakhs.

“The state government like every year will support Bengal Warriors to complete the event successfully. I have seen the team this time. Season V is going to be great for Bengal Warriors. I am sure we will do very well,” said MrSubrata Mukherjee, Minister for Public Health Engineering in Government of West Bengal.

“Bengal Warriors has had mixed journey so far. We reached the play-offs in Season 3 and had a heartbreaking season 4 on the back of some injuries to key players. But throughout we had amazing support of our fans. And with this new look team under a new coach, we are poised to give our best performance till date and have our best shot to winning the League,” said Sandip Tarkas, CEO, Bengal Warriors. “Big Bazaar has been with Bengal Warriors for all the five seasons. We hope that Bengal Warriors will be able to live up to the expectation of the people of the state and give a superlative performance with this new look side,” said Manish Agarwal, Zonal CEO, East, Big Bazaar and FBB.

The team has also brought in 2002 Asian Games Gold Medalist K KJagadeesha as its coach. For the army man, who could not realise his PKL dream in the only season he donned the Jaipur Pink Panthers colours, it is a great opportunity to achieve his aspirations as a coach.

“I want to share my knowledge with the players. We have been doing our camp (at the Tollygunge Club) here for the last 40-45 days and we are taking care of all minute aspects of coaching and training. We avoided drafting injured players. Our maximum attention has been on fitness. We are also working on team combination, skill addition and recovery that will sustain us in the tournament,” Jagadeesha said. “The Team is going through a rigorous regimen and we are hopeful it will reflect in the team’s performance. The boys are going through a lot of fitness and Kabaddi techniques with our new coach. Also, there is a change in the color of the Jersey; last year the home Jersey was dark blue, this year it’s new smart light blue.” Mr Tarkas added.
