Kolkata, March 1, 2025 – The second edition of the French Film Festival Kolkata, a joint initiative by Alliance Française du Bengale and Nandan: West Bengal Film Centre, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Kolkata, concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony. With over 80 films showcased from both French and Indian cinema, the festival reaffirmed its role as a significant cultural bridge between the two nations.
The closing ceremony at Nandan was a night of celebration, marking the festival’s impact on film enthusiasts and industry professionals. The event welcomed dignitaries, filmmakers, and artists, fostering discussions on Indo-French collaborations and the growing exchange of artistic ideas.
Throughout the festival, attendees enjoyed a diverse selection of films across multiple genres, offering insight into the cinematic styles of both countries. The festival also featured masterclasses, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, providing valuable learning opportunities for budding filmmakers and cinephiles.

Distinguished guests at the closing ceremony included Mr. Didier Talpain, Consul General of France in Kolkata, and Mr. Nicolas Facino, Director of Alliance Française du Bengale & Director of the French Film Festival Kolkata. Their invaluable support contributed to the festival’s success. Renowned Indian actress and director Ms. Nandita Das, acclaimed actress Ms. Huma Qureshi, and veteran filmmaker Mr. Sudhir Mishra also attended, engaging in discussions on Indo-French storytelling.
The event was further graced by actor-director-songwriter Mr. Anjan Dutt, actress-producer Ms. Rituparna Sengupta, Bhutanese filmmaker Ms. Dechen Roder, casting director and filmmaker Mr. Mukesh Chhabra, actress Ms. Richa Sharma, and industry veteran Mr. Pritimoy Chakraborty. Ms. Sharmistha Banerjee, CEO of Nandan, played a key role in hosting the event, underscoring its importance as a global cultural platform.
One of the highlights of the evening was the recognition of outstanding films and filmmakers. Special mentions were given to creative storytelling and technical excellence, reinforcing the festival’s role in encouraging cross-cultural narratives and innovative filmmaking.
Reflecting on the festival’s success, Mr. Didier Talpain stated, “Cinema has the power to bridge cultures, and the French Film Festival Kolkata is a testament to that. The exchange of ideas between French and Indian filmmakers has created lasting connections.”
Mr. Nicolas Facino emphasized the festival’s growth, saying, “This year, we screened 82 films, significantly more than last time. Our goal was not just entertainment but also sparking dialogue and reflection.”
Indian filmmaker Ms. Nandita Das highlighted the deep cultural influences of both regions on her work, adding, “Cinema challenges perspectives and provokes introspection. It has the power to shape our thoughts and emotions.”
Ms. Huma Qureshi shared her admiration for the city’s passion for cinema, stating, “The films, the people, and the hospitality have made this experience unforgettable. Kolkata’s love for cinema keeps events like this alive.”
Veteran filmmaker Mr. Sudhir Mishra noted, “Cinema sparks thought and evokes emotion. French cinema continues to inspire filmmakers worldwide, and this festival is a reminder that art has no borders.”
French author and filmmaker Mr. David Foenkinos expressed his pride in screening his latest work, saying, “Fifteen years ago, I began my filmmaking journey. Sharing my film with such a passionate audience in Kolkata is a dream come true.”
Actor-director Mr. Anjan Dutt remarked, “Films teach, inspire, and shape perspectives. I hope more people experience the magic of cinema through this festival.”
