Marking a decade of advanced eye care services in Kolkata, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital has achieved two remarkable vision restoration milestones, reaffirming its expertise in handling some of the most complex eye disorders. The celebrations were attended by legendary singer and Padma Shri awardee Usha Uthup, who praised the hospital’s contribution to making advanced eye care more accessible and patient-friendly.
One of the hospital’s most significant success stories involved a 51-year-old man who had suffered from severely impaired vision in his left eye since childhood due to congenital iris coloboma, a rare birth defect where a portion of the iris fails to develop properly. After decades of living with poor vision and being turned away by multiple hospitals because of the complexity of his condition, the patient finally regained functional vision through advanced treatment at Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Samar Sengupta, Specialist Ophthalmologist, performed Single-Pass Four-Throw (SFT) Pupilloplasty, an innovative iris reconstruction technique developed by Prof. Amar Agarwal, Chairman of Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital. Alongside cataract surgery and implantation of a Capsular Tension Ring to stabilize the weakened lens support system, the procedure successfully improved the patient’s vision in the affected eye from less than 40% to nearly 75%.
The patient had a highly complicated eye condition that included congenital iris coloboma, zonular weakness, lens instability, retinal abnormalities, amblyopia (lazy eye), and early cataracts in both eyes. These multiple complications had made surgery extremely challenging, and several hospitals had earlier declined to operate due to the uncertain outcome.
Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Samar Sengupta said the patient initially underwent successful cataract surgery in his right eye, which encouraged him to seek treatment for his more complicated left eye. Following a carefully planned customized surgical approach, the patient has now regained functional vision and is able to perform daily activities independently after decades of visual disability.
In another remarkable case, the hospital restored spectacle-free vision to a 45-year-old homemaker suffering from bilateral high myopia exceeding -10.00 dioptres. Due to extremely thin corneas and severe refractive error, she was not a suitable candidate for LASIK and had relied on thick spectacles for years.
Under the leadership of Dr. Tanushree Chatterjee, Head of Clinical Services, the medical team performed bilateral Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) using premium Multifocal and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses. The advanced procedure permanently corrected her vision, allowing her to become spectacle-free for the first time in decades and significantly improving her quality of life.
Celebrating the hospital’s 10-year journey in Kolkata, Padma Shri Usha Uthup applauded the institution’s commitment to quality healthcare. She noted that technological advancements have made eye treatments simpler, safer, and virtually painless, encouraging more people to seek timely medical care.
Reflecting on the milestone, Dr. Kaladevi Sathish, Zonal Head – Clinical Services, said the hospital’s decade-long journey in Kolkata represents its commitment to providing advanced, patient-centric eye care, even for the most challenging vision disorders. She emphasized that successful outcomes in rare congenital conditions and extreme refractive errors require not only cutting-edge technology but also highly trained specialists and personalized treatment strategies.
Over the past decade, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital has established itself as one of Kolkata’s leading centres for advanced ophthalmic care, consistently delivering successful outcomes in complex eye surgeries and restoring vision to patients who previously had little hope of recovery.
