The Verdict Upfront
Projapati 2 delivers exactly what its trailer promises—a sentimental father-son drama rooted in Bengali family values, blended with a culinary backdrop. Anchored by strong performances from Mithun Chakraborty and Dev, the film succeeds emotionally in parts, especially in its second half. However, uneven pacing, predictable storytelling, and formula-driven elements stop it from becoming anything more than a decent family entertainer. While fans of the original may appreciate the polish, critical viewers could find the first half sluggish.
Story Snapshot (Spoiler-Free)
Dev plays Joy, a single father and professional chef living in London, raising his young daughter while remaining emotionally distant from his roots. Back in Kolkata, his father Gaur (Mithun Chakraborty) runs a traditional bhater hotel and dreams of seeing his son settle down.
Circumstances force Joy to return home, where generational conflicts, cultural differences, and emotional baggage slowly give way to bonding, humour, and shared aspirations. The 2.3-hour-long film gradually shifts from a light-hearted setup to an emotionally driven second half.
What Works 👍
🔹 Powerhouse Performances
Mithun Chakraborty is the film’s emotional backbone. His restrained expressions, comic timing, and silent emotional beats capture the essence of a traditional Bengali father. Dev appears more mature and confident, and his chemistry with Mithun—especially in conversational scenes and the climax—works well.
Supporting actors add flavour: Kharaj Mukherjee’s drunken sequence is a highlight, Anirban Chakraborti (Jhantu) provides consistent humour, and Kanchan Mallick offers dependable comic support.
🔹 Emotional Highs & Music
The emotional payoff in the second half is effective. Music by Jeet Gannguli, particularly Nachiketa’s standout track, elevate key moments. The culinary angle—chef challenges and food-related conflicts—is woven naturally into the story, adding freshness to the family-drama setup.
🔹 Cultural & Visual Appeal
From London-to-Kolkata transitions to the authentic bhater hotel setting, the film retains a strong Bengali essence, reflecting middle-class struggles and familial bonds.
What Doesn’t Work 👎
🔸 Predictable Plot & Pacing Issues
The story follows a familiar path and suffers from trailer-level predictability. The first half drags, often testing patience. Several subplots—including antagonistic shades and romantic tracks involving Idhika Paul and Jyotirmoyee Kundu—remain underdeveloped and unresolved. The 2.31-min runtime clearly needed tighter editing.
🔸 Forced Add-ons
Comedy often feels forced rather than organic. Excessive songs interrupt emotional scenes that could have worked better through dialogue or visuals. Cameos by Ambarish, Paran Banerjee, and others feel more like box-office tactics than narrative necessities.
🔸 Shallow Emotional Conflicts
Despite being promoted as a “single father” story, the daughter’s role feels largely irrelevant. External conflicts dominate the screenplay, while deeper emotional layers between father and son remain underexplored.
🎬 CineKolkata Final Verdict
Projapati 2 improves upon its predecessor with stronger performances and a more emotionally rewarding climax, making it a safe Christmas watch for families. However, it plays too safe, relying heavily on formula and nostalgia.
Who Should Watch: Family audiences, Dev & Mithun fans
Watch It For: Emotional climax, Mithun’s performance.
