‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ Unveils Stellar Cast; 2027 to Celebrate the Legacy of ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’

Bengali cinema witnessed a memorable morning at Priya Cinema on Sunday as filmmaker Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film ‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ unveiled its stellar cast in character for the first time. The event also brought a major announcement for admirers of Satyajit Ray’s timeless classic ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’, with 2027 set to become a special year for the iconic cinematic legacy.

The event began with Srijit Mukherji unveiling the motion poster of ‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’, offering audiences the first glimpse of the film’s ensemble cast and their characters.

The film stars Jeetu Kamal, Ritwik Bhowmik, Rudranil Ghosh, Samik Roy Chowdhury, Satakshi Nandy, Sairity Banerjee and Arijit Dutta in pivotal roles.

Produced by Hoichoi Studios and Friends Communication, in association with Piyali Films Pvt. Ltd., Maharaja Tomare Selam takes audiences behind the making of one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated classics—Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.

A Story Behind a Cinematic Masterpiece

The upcoming film is not simply a retelling of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne. Instead, Srijit Mukherji explores the imagination, determination and creative struggles that went into bringing Satyajit Ray’s legendary vision to the screen.

The film looks at the journey behind the creation of a cinematic masterpiece and the visionary filmmaker who turned an extraordinary idea into one of Bengali cinema’s most enduring classics.

Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere of the event was the presence of renowned composer and musician Debojyoti Mishra. With a strong association with the musical legacy of Satyajit Ray, Mishra is also contributing the background score for Maharaja Tomare Selam.

A Musical Tribute to Goopy and Bagha

The event also featured a special live musical performance by Band Paridhi, with Durnibar Saha and Sutirtha on vocals.

The performers presented a specially curated tribute featuring some of the memorable songs from Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne. The performance turned Priya Cinema into a celebration of nostalgia, music and Bengali cinematic heritage.

‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ Gets 4K Restoration

One of the biggest announcements of the event was the news that Satyajit Ray’s ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is undergoing a prestigious 4K restoration by Film Heritage in association with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation.

The restored version is scheduled to be showcased in 2027, giving a new generation the opportunity to experience Ray’s classic in a restored format.

Interestingly, ‘Maharaja Tomare Selam’ is also scheduled for release in 2027. This creates a unique cinematic connection between the original masterpiece and a new film exploring the story behind its creation.
