Mithun Chakraborty aka Mithun Da’s epic dance moves and his acting define him. But what about knowing him as a person? Most of us don’t even know that his real name is Gouranga Chakraborty and that he was born in Hyderabad. Mithun Da holds a chemistry degree from Scottish Church College in Kolkata.
He was a Naxalite before joining the film industry. It was the accidental death of his only brother that brought him back home.
During his younger days, Mithun Da was a professional wrestler. He won West Bengal State Wrestling Championship in the Junior Category. Also, he received intensive martial arts training that earned him a black belt.
He won a National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut film Mrigayaa (1976).
After that he won two more National Awards for Best Actor for Tahader Katha (1992) and a Best Supporting Actor for Vivekananda (1994).
Mithun Da became a comic hero after Jimmy Zhingchak – Agent of D.I.S.C.O was introduced. The main protagonist character Jimmy is inspired from him. The foreword of the book was written by him.
Though Mithun Da is married to Yogeeta Bali and has four children. He was first engaged to Mamata Shankar, his co-star from his first film.
Fascinatingly, there are 5 books written in Bengali on the life of Mithun Chakraborty. They are Amar Nayikara, Ananya Mithun, Mithuner Katha, Cinemay Naamte Hole and Marbo Ekhane Lash Porbe Shoshane. He along with Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt started CINTAA (Cine & T.V Artistes Association) in 1992. It is a trust that supports needy actors.
He’s the owner of Monarch Group of Hotels. These hotels are located at Ooty, Mysore and Masinagudi.
Apart from Hindi cinema, he has appeared in Bengali, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Telugu and Punjabi movies as well. In total, he has acted in more than 350 films.
